Research That Matters

Dr. Esther Suswam, a professor in our Natural Science and Mathematics Department, is helping to help increase gender equity in STEM through a $1.2 million National Science Foundation ADVANCE grant awarded to Miles and two other historically black colleges.

Art That Inspires

Anthony Bingham, who teaches art and humanities at Miles, explores themes of African-American traditions, place, and buried memory through photography and sculpture. Earlier in his career, he spent time in South Africa as an artist-in-residence.

Co-authored by Miles Provost Jarralynne Agee, "Tears to Triumph" chronicles real-life stories of women overcoming adversity.

Mayor Richard Arrington, a Miles alum and former professor, and the first Black mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, reflects on his life and esteemed career in "There's Hope for the World." The book was made into a documentary.

Dr. Olivia Cook’s dissertation on leadership styles among African-American women went viral. Since its publication, she has written two more books: "Olivia on Purpose" and "For the Love of Thirty."
