Mission

The McNair Research Scholar Program (MRSP) aims to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented segments of society. The MRSP is federally funded through The Ronald E. McNair Achievement Scholar Grant of the Department of Education to Miles College.

Ronald McNair

The primary goal of the McNair Research Scholar Program (MRSP) is to provide effective interventions for low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students to successfully complete a four-year undergraduate degree and enroll in a post-baccalaureate program leading to a doctorate degree.

The MRSP achieves its mission by providing research, scholarly activities, and other training services to high-performing students to increase participation in research and scholarly activities, enhance preparation and readiness for graduate school entry and build resilience that leads to persistence in a graduate program.

Gradation 2023 1

Admission to McNair Research Scholar Program is limited to students who have completed Sophomore standing and are Rising Juniors, Juniors, Rising Seniors, or Seniors. Applicants must be interested in going to graduate school in the fall semester immediately following graduation from their undergraduate study and attaining a Ph.D. or Master’s degree or post-baccalaureate study.

Eligibility

Eligibility for admission into the MRSP program is based on the following federally established criteria:

1. Income

2. Family Background (first-generation college students)

3. Racial groups that are underrepresented in graduate education (mainly doctorate degrees or post-baccalaureate education).

4. Other eligibility criteria specified by the Department of Education.

5. A GPA of 3.0 or higher

Miles College created a Pre-McNair Pool

In addition, Miles College has created a Pre-McNair Pool for McNair-Aspiring Freshmen and Sophomore students to receive limited allowable services that prepare them to be future McNair participants.

Participation Requirements

Students must:

1. Be enrolled full-time at Miles College (fall and spring semesters) and participate in the McNair recommended summer activities

2. Must remain enrolled at Miles College and strive to graduate from Miles College within 6 years

3. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher

4. Attend all McNair services for the academic year and summer terms as recommended, which include: hands-on research experiences, academic counseling, advising, summer internships, tutoring, success coaching, financial support services, and other supportive services. 

5. Complete an application, including signing the declaration.

Declaration

By signing below, I hereby acknowledge that I have thoroughly read and considered each of the McNair scholar requirements, and I agree to uphold them if I am accepted for participation in the McNair Research Scholar Program. I further understand that I can lose my place in MRSP and all the privileges associated with participation if I fail to do any of the above after being accepted.

  • The Ronald E. McNair Research Scholar Program prepares undergraduate students to be able to enroll in and successfully complete post-baccalaureate programs or graduate school after graduation from college. We primarily provide research and scholarly experiences, Tutoring, Advising, and a host of other services, including test prep and assistance with sourcing admissions, enrollment, graduate school visits, and stipends.

     

    A student needs to spend at least two semesters in the program before graduation.

    A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for participation. McNair participants must have completed their Sophomore standing and should be a Rising Junior, Junior, Rising Senior, or Senior.

  • Freshmen and Sophomore students can participate in the Pre-McNair program which exposes them to select activities that prepare them to participate In the McNair Scholar program once they have completed their sophomore standing. Pre-McNair participants do not receive the Summer internship stipend but may participate in select training activities.
