Summer Youth Employment Program
100 Jefferson County Youth will be placed in a PAID workforce training orientation at
Miles College campus with professional mentors and trainers before engaging in 6
weeks of paid work experience in businesses and agencies throughout the area.

Eligibility for summer employment
- 16-21 years of age (proof of age and identification required)
- Jefferson County Resident (Proof of residency required)
- Low Income (Proof of income required)

Work site participation:
The carefully selected work sites will allow participants to be exposed  to exciting
careers by working in safe, enriching business environments  where they receive
the guidance of an immediate supervisor and continued support of Miles College
Program staff.


TO APPLY:
STEP 1: Determine your eligibility.  
(If you answer YES to all of the questions below - you may be eligible
for the program!)

  1. Are you 16 – 21 ?
  2. Do you have a family income that meets the requirements for poverty level or
    are you  (or your head of household) receiving any government assistance
    (SSI, TANF, Food Stamps or Unemployment) ?**
  3. Do you live in Jefferson County?
  4. Do you have a copy of your Social Security Card and do your parents have
    theirs (if you are under 18)?
  5. (If you are male) Have you registered for selective service?
  6. (If you are a High School Graduate or College student) Can you retrieve a copy
    of your Diploma, GED or Transcript)?

STEP 2: Determine your income eligibility**

Family Size = 4  Income Level = $22,523
Family Size = 5  Income Level = $26,583
Family Size = 6  Income Level = $31,089

STEP 3: Submit an Application
Take the following documentation to the Center for Workforce Development to apply
for summer employment and ask to be referred to the Miles College program! If you
are under 19 you must BRING your parent to apply.

  1. Alabama Job Link Registration Packet (From the State of Alabama One Stop
    Career Center located at 3440 3rd Ave South, Birmingham, AL 35222)
  2. Bring Social Security cards for all members of the family (Youth, Parents if you
    are claimed by your parents or under 18, and Dependants –for any children
    supported by the Youth seeking employment)
  3. Driver’s license for youth and parent (if under 18 or claimed by your parents
  4. Proof of residences (Lease or utility bill)
  5. Proof of income (Pay stub for three pay periods, Bank Statements or W-2s)
  6. Award letters (if any- TANF, SSI, Unemployment)
  7. Resume
  8. High School Diploma, GED or College Transcript
  9. Selective Service for all males over 18 years of age

WORK SITE PARTNERS!
Are you interested in becoming a work site partner. We will provide a range
of youth workers from entry – level to pre-professional employees who will be
paid to work in your establishment from June 7 – July 19th. Please see the
forms to your left to apply.

Eligibility to become a work site include:
- Non hazardous conditions (the participants should not come into
contact with pools, animals or toxins)
- Enriching work experiences
- Positions that do not displace paid workers
- Ideal industries include health care, law, finance, government, social
services, faith-based community activities and educational fields.
