To audition for the Music Major you will need to perform the following:

  • Major Scales and Arpeggios, to be played flawlessly at a tempo determined by the candidate. Normally, two octaves will be expected.  Singers should be prepared to sing scales using vowels for range determination
  • You will be asked to perform three pieces in contrasting styles and moods to show the depth and breadth of playing. For example, you may play a slow piece to show off phrasing and lyricism, a fast piece to show off technical playing, and a third piece with a contrasting style. Consider representing major style periods, including the baroque, classical, romantic, and modern era

Skills and qualities that will be considered:

    • Playing or singing with a characteristic tone
    • Using correct fingerings
    • Deportment
    • Musicality and Stylistic awareness
    • Pitch
    • Tone quality

The audition also requires a short interview. For the interview, the music faculty will look for evidence of a good attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to excel as a musician.

The audition may in part determine your eligibility for scholarship aid.
