To gain acceptance, the prospective music student
must pass the audition and complete the Music Theory
Placement Examination. Acceptance into Miles College
does not guarantee acceptance as a Music Major.
Audition
The audition evaluates the prospective music major’s
potential for steady progress on the primary applied
instrument. The applied music faculty determines specific
requirements for the primary applied audition. Typically,
the prospective student will perform scales, solos,
and other materials. Auditions are offered on a rolling
basis and during special audition dates. The applied
jury for MU 141 can serve as the audition into the
music major.

The audition results in one of three outcomes:
- Acceptance into the major;
- Provisional acceptance into the major, with a special
proscribed course of action to remove the provisional
status;
- Denial of acceptance into the music major. The
student may appeal this decision, in writing, to
the Coordinator of Music.
Music Placement Evaluation
The Music Placement Evaluation tests musicianship and
knowledge of theory. The music evaluation determines
the theory and keyboard musicianship classes into
which the student will be placed.
Students are encouraged to enter the music major program
during their first semester at Miles College. Students
intending to major in music should fill out the Declaration
of Major form, available in the Counseling and Testing
Center located in Ramsay Hall.
